Everything about bottles

”Creative, innovative, unique entertainment!”

This is probably the best way to describe what Bottle Boys (Flaskedrengene) is all about. It all began in late 2005 when four guys and a girl teamed up at a party at Institute of Musicology in Copenhagen and literally decided to blow  a bit of life into the party. The five, creative students found a handful of bottles, tuned them to different notes using water, and went on to play what would become the first in a long series of bottle-concerts over the following years. Back then the repertoire consisted primarily of small bottle arrangements of well-known Danish pop songs.

It quickly occurred to the band that the perfect way of promoting the bottle music was to play in the streets, and soon the concerts moved outside to the streets of Copenhagen much to the delight of the many people passing by. The street concerts still play an important part in the Bottle Band image, and if you are visiting Copenhagen there is still a good chance that you may catch a bottle concert somewhere around in the streets. There is simply no getting around the fact that the best way to experience bottle music is way up close, so close that you can follow the lightning quick tone shifts between the bottle players with both eyes and ears, and at the same time feel the intensity of the musical communication!

Of course, noone should be bereft of the opportunity to experience the bottle music played live, and so, for the third year in a roll, Bottle Boys are embarking on a European Bottle Tour. Former years have seen the band play in Spain, France, Germany, Hungary and The Czech Republic, and this year The trip takes them to The Netherlands (Amsterdam) and Belguim (Bruxelles).

Bottle Boys is even more than a quirky street orchestra, and as far as showbiz ambitions go the sky is the limit. The bottle music was broadcast live on national prime time TV for the first time in January 2007 as an entertainment act for the national rounds of the Eurovision Song Contest, and this certainly marked a commercial breakthrough for the band. Since then, over the past 3 years, Bottle Boys have annually played the Skanderborg Festival, DK’s largest festival after Roskilde, landed a fine semi-final spot on the “DK’s Got Talent”-show and guested the re-occurring show “Late Night Saturday” at Nørrebro Teater. On top of this, we just came home from a series of concerts at this years Roskilde Festival, be sure to check out the news section for lots of pictures and video from this great event!

As the text reads, plenty of things have happened for the bottle band since the humble beginnings, and rest assured it doesn’t stop here. Today, Bottle Boys consists of 5 musicians sporting stylish suits and a vast array of mind boggling (some would say crazy) instruments made from bottles and nothing but bottles. All things ‘bottle’, from simple blowing techniques to our monstrous bottle-xylophone and a complete drum set made entirely out of bottles (and a few kilometres of duct tape) go into the musical phenomenon that is The Bottle Boys, this is why our motto is:

EVERYTHING can be played on bottles!
